Stomach Cancer
The stomach is an
organ of storage and digestion in the left upper
abdomen. Stomach cancer occurs when stomach cells
grow uncontrollably to form a mass that causes pain,
bleeding, blockage or spread to other organs.
The best chance
for cure is complete surgical removal of the cancer.
If diagnosis of stomach cancer is delayed, it may
have spread to lymph nodes or other vital organs.
Stomach cancer is
less sensitive to chemo and radiotherapy than say
breast or colon cancer. Effective cure thus hinges
on complete surgical removal of the cancerous part
of the stomach along with the lymph nodes and
intra-abdominal fat pad. This is know as a Radical
or D2 Gastrectomy. A Radical or D2 Gastrectomy is a
highly specialised procedure.
